Traveling with your dog
Is Your Dog Traveling on Vacation?
It’s wonderful to bring your dog on vacation, but there’s a bit more to pack than just a leash and their favorite bed.
When traveling in Europe, you must ensure things like microchips, EU Pet Passports, and rabies vaccinations are in order. Some countries have additional requirements.
At Hundeklinikken, we are happy to help with the standard rules for travel within the EU and to Norway. If your dog is traveling to other countries, we recommend that you research the current entry requirements with that country’s embassy or veterinary authorities yourself.
Travel within the EU
🐾 Microchip
As a rule, your dog must be ID-marked with a microchip.
📕 EU Pet Passport
The dog must have a valid EU Pet Passport.
💉 Rabies vaccination
The dog must have a valid rabies vaccination.
These are the three core elements highlighted by the main requirements. Hundeklinikken can help with rabies vaccinations, issuing passports, and checking chip numbers and information.

Taking your dog to Norway?
I think we could use a highlighted box here, because Norway has this extra point in the material:
Remember treatment for fox tapeworm
Norway largely follows EU rules for pet travel, but dogs must also be treated for fox tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) before entry.
The treatment must be administered by a veterinarian within the specified timeframe and correctly documented in the dog’s passport.
Please contact us well in advance so we can help plan the treatment correctly.
Going further away?
For travel to countries outside the EU and Norway, Hundeklinikken does not provide advice on individual country entry requirements.
Rules vary between countries and can change. Therefore, we recommend that you contact the country’s embassy or veterinary authority to find out exactly which requirements apply.
Once you know what is required, we can of course help with the veterinary exams, vaccinations, or treatments that we are able to perform.
Also remember to check the rules for bringing your dog back to Denmark.

We love this clinic from the day we took our golden retriever there. Plus Victoire speaks French so it makes it super easier for us sometimes to communicate. Everyone is so sweet with our dog and we feel very safe leaving him every time. Very recommended!

We are SO happy with our lovely Veterinarians here! Our dog absolutely adores everyone and they have always taken the upmost care and given us all the support we’ve needed to ensure our girl feels loved, comfortable, safe and happy. She quite literally starts pulling on her leash to get to the clinic faster when she recognises the area. We are so grateful for the support from Hundeklinikken and are thankful for their wonderful care and kindness. Thank you to this incredible team - you’re always so diligent and helpful with advice, flexibility, patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you next time. 🫶🏽
Parasites during travel
Legal entry requirements are one thing. What we recommend from a veterinary perspective to protect your dog during travel is another.
In other parts of Europe, dogs can be exposed to parasites and parasite-borne diseases that we rarely or never see here at home.
Please let us know where in Europe you are going. Then we can help assess which parasite protection might be relevant for that specific trip.
Remember the dog itself
I actually think Anne’s text is very good and should have its own section with a vacation photo of a dog.
Just because the dog is allowed to come along doesn’t necessarily mean it thinks it’s a good vacation.
- How does your dog handle long car rides, trains, ferries, or planes?
- How does it handle heat?
- Is it comfortable in new surroundings?
- Does it have illnesses or medications that require special planning?
- What are the options for veterinary care at the destination?
For some dogs, a vacation with the family is fantastic. For others, the best vacation might be staying home with people they know.
